Summary of the Larry Nassar Case
Beginning in 2015, the sexual abuse case against Dr. Larry Nassar – and Michigan State University, the U.S. Olympic Committee and USA Gymnastics for covering up the abuse – was an unprecedented scandal. While several gymnasts said that they complained against Nassar in the 1990s, the USA Gymnastics did not take action against him until years later, in 2015.
For 18 years, Doctor Lawrence (“Larry”) Nassar was the United States women’s national gymnastics team doctor. He is now a convicted sex offender who is serving 60 years in federal prison (plus two additional sentences of at least 40 years each on the state level, giving him a de facto life sentence without parole) after pleading guilty to the charges of sexual assault of minors, child pornography and tampering with evidence. He has been referred to as the “pedophile doctor,” with some of his victims as young as 8.
Manly, Stewart & Finaldi were the lead attorneys on the civil side of the Nassar case from the beginning. One of Nassar’s first known victims is former competitive gymnast Sarah Klein, who is now an attorney with the firm. Olympic medalist Jamie Dantzscher represented by Attorney John Manly, was the first athlete to file suit against Nassar for sexual abuse, leading to his arrest and subsequent conviction.
