Survivor Attorney Calls for Independent Investigation Following Arrest of North Penn Teacher and Coach Jason Theodore
Following the arrest of North Penn School District physical education teacher and coach Theodore on charges involving alleged sexual offenses against minors, Philadelphia survivor attorney Sarah Klein is calling on the district to conduct a comprehensive, independent investigation into Theodore’s access to children and whether warning signs or opportunities to intervene were missed.
“The fact that police currently have no evidence that the alleged abuse occurred on school property should not be the end of North Penn’s inquiry—it should be the beginning,” said Klein, an attorney who represents survivors of sexual abuse and the first survivor of Larry Nassar.
“Theodore wasn’t simply an employee who walked into one classroom every day. He was an elementary school physical education teacher, a middle school wrestling coach, and involved with an elementary triathlon. Those positions gave him access to children and credibility with families across the district. North Penn needs to determine exactly how extensive that access was, whether there were complaints or warning signs, and whether anything was missed.”
Authorities have identified three alleged victims, including a former student, and investigators have indicated there may be additional victims.
“When allegations involve someone who has spent years in positions of trust around children, an institution cannot limit its response to cooperating with the criminal investigation,” Klein said. “North Penn owes its families a transparent accounting of what it knew, what it should have known, and whether its policies and safeguards were sufficient to protect children.”
Klein urged anyone with information about Theodore’s interactions with minors to contact law enforcement.
“Parents deserve answers, and children deserve to know that if an adult crossed a boundary or made them uncomfortable, they can speak up and they will be believed.”
