Reports of Sexual Misconduct and Gross Negligence Against Pathak

Last fall, state officials began investigating colorectal surgeon Dr. Ranganath Pathak on his interactions with three patients. In May 2021, the attorney general’s office filed a formal complaint against Pathak, signed by the Medical Board of California. The complaint requests a hearing to revoke or suspend Pathak’s licenses. As of today, there hasn’t been a date set for the hearing.

Currently, Pathak faces allegations for:

  • Sexual misconduct
  • Gross negligence
  • Repeated negligent acts
  • Inadequate recordkeeping
  • Unprofessional conduct

The complaint alleges that Pathak gave his patient a vaginal exam without her consent, touched a different patient’s breasts “for at least three minutes” and did not keep consistent records showing if he had a chaperone in the room during exams and procedures. In the complaint, Pathak denied most of the allegations to an investigator, but admitted to inconsistent recordkeeping and occasionally hugging his patients.

Where Is Pathak Employed?

According to the filing, Pathak is one of four physicians at the Sacramento Colon & Rectal Medical Group, which also has offices in Carmichael, CA and Roseville, CA. Pathak may also have privileges to practice at other hospital facilities, such as Sutter Health and Dignity Health. Both facilities have launched an internal investigation on Pathak’s allegations.

Pathak has been practicing for almost two decades. His medical licenses were issued in 2002 and are set to expire this September, unless they are renewed.
