USA Swimming Subject of Congressional Investigation
The National Governing Body of the United States Olympic Committee is facing a Congressional inquiry into the long history of sexual abuse perpetrated by USA Swimming coaches. Recently, allegations have surfaced alleging that USA Swimming worked to cover up a long history of childhood sexual abuse – usually occurring between coaches and their minor swimmers.
USA Swimming lobbied heavily to prevent the passage of SB 131 – a California law that will open a one year window in the statute of limitations associated with childhood sexual abuse, so that many victims will be able to file a lawsuit, despite previously being barred. SB 131 was passed this summer by the state legislature, and will likely become law, assuming that Governor Brown does not veto the legislation before October 13, 2013.
