Teacher on Administrative Leave After Condoning Sexual Relations Between Teachers & Students

On Jan. 22, the LA Times reported that a high school art teacher was put on paid leave after allegedly posting comments on Facebook, indicating that he condoned sexual relations between teachers and their students.

The teacher happens to work at South Hills High located in West Covina, which is the same school where two female teachers were recently arrested on suspicion of having sexual relations with students while on an overnight beach camping trip that was arranged by one of the educators.

A recent search of Facebook did not turn up a profile for the art teacher, it may have been taken down from the popular social media site. A school district official confirmed this wording from the art teacher: Students should have kept their “stupid mouths shut and enjoyed it.”

The high school art teacher worked up until Jan. 21, but once the school district caught wind of the Facebook posting, he was placed on paid administrative leave pending the district’s investigation, said Michelle Van Der Linden, a spokeswoman from the Covina Valley Unified School District.

Van Der Linden said that the art teacher’s comments were unbecoming of a teacher, and said that it was inappropriate for him to condone the inappropriate behavior of the accused teachers.

According to the Orange County Sheriff’s Department, two female teachers in their 30s were arrested earlier this month after being accused of arranging a camping trip to San Clemente beach, where they allegedly had sex with students; this was not a school-sponsored event.

As of Jan. 22, the Orange County District Attorney’s Office had not filed charges against the two teachers, and they were both released on bail the day following their arrest.

After the recent arrests, the district announced that a hotline was in the works for students to anonymously report any student-teacher relations that made them feel “uncomfortable.”
