What Is Coach Sexual Abuse in San Francisco?

San Francisco sexual abuse is often used interchangeably with sexual assault, but abuse is technically an ongoing pattern of sexual assault and misconduct against a victim over a period of time. Coach sexual abuse refers to sex crimes committed by a coach against a player. Coach sexual abuse can occur at any level, from youth sports to collegiate teams and the Olympics. It can occur in schools, gymnasiums, the YMCA and many other sports organizations.

Coach sexual abuse can involve any type of sexual contact between a coach and player, including the touching of private parts, sexual advances or harassment, inappropriate kissing or hugging, sexually explicit training methods, sexual innuendos, requests for sexual favors, rape, statutory rape, and sexual abuse by doctors.

Coach sexual abuse typically arises due to an imbalance of power between a coach and a player and the coach’s position of authority. Players trust their coaches and want to gain their approval. This can lead to sexual abusers taking advantage of their positions of power and trust to abuse and assault players – often grooming players for abuse at an early age. Coaches are also often unsupervised with players, such as in locker rooms and offices.

Recent cases of sexual abuse in San Francisco include:

  • In March 2022, a University of San Francisco baseball coach, Nino Giarratano, was fired after allegations that he used harassment and sexualized behavior as intimidation tactics to train his players, including nudity on the field and sexualized exercises. The allegations also involve Giarratano’s former assistant coach Troy Nakamura.
  • In March 2020, long-time track and field coach John Rembao – who coached at the Los Gatos High School and the University of California, among other places – was suspended on allegations of sexual misconduct. The allegations were made by three women who were coached by him in the 1990s and early 2000s.
  • In 2017, a retired San Francisco teacher and coach, Bob Gamino, was accused of sexually assaulting students during his time at John O’Connell High School. Gamino was the physical education teacher and girls soccer team coach. Multiple female students came forward with sexual misconduct, harassment and assault allegations against Gamino.

Coach sexual abuse is almost always preventable. A school or sports organization has a responsibility to protect its players from sexual misconduct through the use of preventive measures such as coach background checks, sexual assault training, proper player supervision and assault reporting protocols. If an institution fails to protect a player from sexual assault, it can be held responsible for this lapse through a civil lawsuit.
