Four Lawsuits Alleging Sexual Abuse Filed Against Los Angeles Unified School District

Four lawsuits have been filed against the Los Angeles Unified School District following the discovery that a teacher at Miramonte Elementary School had committed lewd acts against many of his students. These four lawsuits represent the first of possibly hundreds of lawsuits to follow in the wake of this discovery.

The lawsuits, filed by John Manly of Manly, Stewart & Finaldi and former State Senator Martha Escutia, allege that the School District acted negligently in the retention and supervision of one of its teachers – the perpetrator in this action, Mark Berndt. Mr. Berndt has been accused of blindfolding students and feeding them semen-laced cookies, among other alleged crimes, such as placing insects on the childrens’ faces. His criminal case is still pending.
