An Overview of the Charges Against Dr. William Thompson IV

Doctor William Thompson IV is affiliated with Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian in Newport Beach, CA.  On September 20th, 2023, he was arrested at his Newport Beach medical practice after a joint investigation by the California Department of Consumer Affairs and the Newport Beach Police Department.  On September 27th, Dr. Thompson was formally charged with:

  • Eight felony counts of sexual penetration by means of fraudulent representation of a professional purpose.
  • Three felony counts of sexual battery by fraud,
  • Two felony counts of forcible oral copulation.

Dr. Thompson faces a maximum sentence of 30 years to life plus 25 years if convicted on all counts.  He is scheduled to be arraigned on November 2, 2023 at the Harbor Justice Center in Newport Beach. Thompson is currently out on $100,000 bond.

According to Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer, Dr. Thompson exploited vulnerable patients for his own sexual gratification.  “Unfortunately, because of his specialized area of practice,” Spitzer said, “Dr. Thompson put the very patients he was supposed to treat with professionalism and dignity, in a situation where they may have felt they had no other choice but to be subjected to sexual abuse in order to receive the treatment they needed to continue to live.”

Options for Survivors

While Dr. Thompson does face criminal charges for his criminal behavior with nine patients, it is likely that there are many more survivors.  In his position serving the LGBTQ+ community, Dr. Thompson had access to a large number of vulnerable patients.  If you or a loved one were a patient of Dr. Thompson and survived sexual abuse or misconduct, you may be eligible to file a civil claim against him and the institutions that allowed the abuse to take place.

At Manly, Stewart & Finaldi, we are dedicated to helping survivors of sexual abuse – our experience in handling cases against medical institutions is unparalleled.  We firmly believe that perpetrators of sexual abuse and the institutions that allow them to take advantage of vulnerable patients must be held accountable.
