Twenty-Nine Charges of Molestation Filed Against Baker

When Cardinal Mahony found out that Father Baker was a child molester, he did what all Catholic leaders of the time would do, he sent Baker to treatment. When the results of the treatment came back and said that Baker should not be allowed to interact with kids, Mahony again performed in accordance with Diocese policy at the time and completely ignored the recommendation, allowing Baker to minister to children for more than a decade.

Baker was finally removed from ministry in 2000, but only after a settlement was reached with the people he victimized. Testimony from just one survivor of Baker’s abuse was enough to convince a judge that the case should proceed to trial.
